Alice Springs: Where worlds collide [video]

eagle-glider-alice-springs Still from video by Zac MitchellThe countdown has started to my 2013 October Business Month return to Alice Springs on Monday and Tuesday, October 7 and 8, 2013.

And as luck would have it, as I began preparations for my keynote about using smartphone-shot video as a marketing tool, I stumbled upon this YouTube clip by Zac Mitchell that is starkly simple but conveys so much.

You can see the video at the bottom of this page.

What’s in the frame?

It is four minutes of footage of a remote control glider taking off and landing from the Alice Springs Radio Control Modellers club but midway through, the little aircraft is attacked by an eagle.

There is no speaking, no music, just a few captions.

The bird attack is even played back in slow motion for greater effect.

Along the way, we get a ‘bird’s eye’ view of the outback.

What’s in the experience?

As I watched this, I had a few ‘a ha’ moments.

Firstly, this was video that someone shot themselves to capture the experience of their hobby.

Secondly, being up in the sky, as it were, and then suddenly attacked by an eagle, gives the viewer a small taste of what life is like for wildlife out in the state of nature; predator and prey eke out their existence, keeping the important cycles of life on this planet spinning around.

Thirdly, the lack of any super special effects, just some editing and some simple captions, helps give context to the video without detracting from it. Nor does the lack of Hollywood-style production values lessen the impact.

What do we learn from this?

My message in October Business Month will be that we all have moments and insights worth capturing and sharing via blogs and/or video, as a powerful way of connecting and engaging with customers, potential customers and those people who influence our marketplace.

I will show you how easy it is to find your stories and set them free, to soar like a proverbial eagle! Just make sure you wear a hat, and keep one eye on the ceiling above you.

I hope you can join me for either Workshop 1 or Workshop 2 on Monday, October 7, 2013, and/or come along to my Keynote presentation: Lights, Camera, Blog, at 6pm on Tuesday, October 8, 2013.

Now for that simple video.
