Top End business flexes its online video muscles

The October Business Month’s Lights, Camera, Blog keynote and workshops are over and now the local video output is starting to see the light of day.

First cab off the rank is Ultimate Gym and Fitness.

Vania and Phil from Ultimate Gym attended the October Business Month events and have taken their next steps into the world of using online video.

I say ‘next’ steps because they have already used video in the past but came along to the Lights, Camera, Blog workshops to pick up some extra tips.

You will see they are playing with more of a casual feel and a ‘peep behind the curtain’ approach.

Lights, Camera, Blog Part 09: Notes from the keynote

lights camera blog obm keynote summary darwin 2012

Vania and Phil crafting video at the Lights, Camera, Blog workshop as part of October Business Month, Darwin, 2012

Lights Camera Blog has wrapped up for October Business Month in the Northern Territory.

I promised to share the key points from the keynote presentation, delivered in the Darwin Entertainment Centre on October 17, so here they are.

You will also find a video version of this summary of Lights, Camera, Blog a little lower on this page.

People need you

The first point to note is that people out there NEED you.

Some KNOW you exist and want to become members or use your products and services.

Some DON’T – and have no idea they should become part of your world.

That is why Lights, Camera, Blog was created; to expand your marketing toolkit with some tools that are less than a year old.

Story is key

Humans love stories and we know that information shared in stories tends to ‘stick’ in our minds for a long time.

Certainly a lot longer than a list of features and benefits.

However, most of us have let our story making skills wither and we have become passive consumers of the Story Telling Machinery – newspapers, books, radio, television, theatre and cinema.

Lights, Camera, Blog Part 08: Shooting a la Jake The Peg style with a homemade tripod

steve-davis-tripod

Improvised tripod for an iPhone or similar, made by Barry Davis

Jake The Peg with his extra leg straddled the top of the charts in Australia during the transition from the 60s to the 70s.

It seems it has finally met its match with my homemade tripod whipping up a frenzy of enquiries and having some people DEMAND I get my dad to start production.

Just like Jake, this tripod could be just the thing to help transition between eras (of your business marketing).

If you missed my October Business Month keynote and workshops last week, you would have missed seeing this tripod in action.

I promised I would share its details with you for those people looking to test the waters with in house video and photography on their smart phones but who are keen to ‘do it right’.

As with all handy inventions, this one was brought about by necessity as a short term fix but is likely to stay in use for a while.

So lets recap why tripods are important for making your ‘homemade’ images look professional and then walk you through the ingredients.

Lights, Camera, Blog Part 07: Making and publishing one-take videos

obm-keynote-2012

Steve Davis delivering Lights, Camera, Blog at the Darwin Entertainment Centre October 2012 (Photo shared on Twitter by Laura Costelloe)

Last night we had a ball at the Darwin Entertainment Centre where Lights, Camera, Blog – the Keynote finally took place.

I want to share with you the two, on-take videos we made on stage.

As you will see, they are a little rough and ready but could easily be re-shot in one take in more ‘controlled’ conditions because they are both based on simple, focused ideas for each business.

Before I show them, I want to say a big thank you to everybody who came last night. It was such a warm audience and your happiness in volunteering to undergo electric shock in the name of making a video did blow me away!

There were some videos I didn’t get to use and I will talk about them later on this website.

But now, to video.

The one thing to remember about one-take videos is to just have ONE, SIMPLE idea.

It helps if you can move quickly through your material too.

A benefit of one-take video is that you have next to no editing required and your viewer gets to see a duration of just a minute or two (most video windows online show you how long a clip will be before you hit play – anything much over 2 minutes needs to be completely compelling) meaning they are more than likely to click to view.

So let’s look at our handiwork.

Keynote speech compromised through industrial theft

nt-obm-industrial-espionage

Who is this man who filmed himself filming the Steve Davis October Business Month keynote notes?

Does the video below capture a brazen act of industrial espionage and intellectual property theft?

Can you identify the man in the photo, right?

Here is what I know.

Earlier this week, after being out at a workshop, I grabbed a sheet of paper to scribble down my flow of thoughts for my October Business Month keynote speech, being delivered next Wednesday night, (October 17, 2012).

It appears that I was seen placing that in my suit coat pocket before leaving.

As it happens, my suit jacket usually sits on a hanger in my car and did so throughout the week, with my keynote plan inside.

Today it was brought to my attention that the contents of the note have been compromised.

Thanks to a team of investigators, some video has  been intercepted on YouTube which appears to be footage made by the intruder(s) themselves.

The investigation team has since edited the footage down to a few minutes, below, to share publicly so we can help identify those responsible.

Do you know who is in the video?

Lights, Camera, Blog Part 05: Using scraps to make video

Use video scraps to make short clips

The Jack of All Trades video still

I encourage you, as you practice with your smart phone or video camera around the workplace, out in the field, or even around home, to experiment and hold onto as many clips as you can.

This is because you never know when that little clip you have sitting in the Camera Roll of your iPhone will be just the thing you need to illustrate a point in a short video clip.

This week, I have a real world example from my Camera Roll.

When I was in town last month for my Darwin NBN workshops for small to medium businesses and not for profit organisations, I shot a short clip of Jack Hughes from the Business Enterprise Centre (which is hosting the NBN workshop series over the next to years) putting up the NBN banner.

I did it because I had my iPhone in my hand, we had just arrived ahead of a busy day, and I was mainly shooting him to see how he’d react.

But when I returned to my office a few days later, it occurred to me that this clip could convey a couple of key messages about the workshops in a tongue in cheek manner.

Here’s what I did with these ‘scraps’.

Lights, Camera, Blog Part 04: Customer generated video – if they can do it, you can

Fish Underwater - Humbug Fishing Charter Darwin

A still from the customer-generated video about Humbug Fishing Charters in Darwin (Image by dionoxy via YouTube)

What is the biggest difference between customers taking video of their experience of your product, and you doing it?

They don’t tend to ‘over think’ things or worry about ‘messaging’.

What I find so invaluable about videos of your product or service being made by other people is that have the freedom to hone in on just the best bits (or the worst bits) of your offerings.

There is much we can learn from user generated content as marketers of our own businesses.

However, the most important thing is that we get to truly see ourselves, our products or our services through the eyes of the USERS.

And what might happen from time to time is that this fresh take on your business might be BETTER than any of your efforts in the past.

Today, I want to show you a great example of user generated video from a Top End business, and then summarise a couple of points.

PS Before we start, if you want to see lots of sample videos and pick up some insights for finding your own stories for promotion through blog articles and video, come and see my October Business Month keynote, Lights, Camera, Blog, on Wednesday night, October 17 from 6pm to 8pm at the Darwin Entertainment Centre. You can book online.

Lights, Camera, Blog Part 03: Video and blogging give customers a peep behind the curtain

Steve Davis Lights Camera Blog October Business Month Promo 2012

Lights Camera Blog is about creating content that gives prospective clients a ‘peep behind your curtain’. Steve Davis on set for the OBM Keynote promo video shoot.

There is something about ‘the forbidden’ that intrigues human beings.

Whether it is glimpsing things we are not meant to, being first to enter a new fashion store or pushing our bodies to unnatural limits, we are drawn to such things like moths to flames.

The rationale behind Lights Camera Blog, my October Business Month keynote and limited workshop series the following day, is that all of us are interested in taking a peep behind the curtain of products and services we love or are researching.

This would explain why people queue up to visit confectionery plants, biscuit factories, backstage tours, even mines and smelters.

The simple but dedicated acts of producing interesting and helpful content creates an opportunity for someone searching for the products or services we provide to ‘taste and try before they buy’ by reading or seeing our approach to using or providing the products/services, or by approaching the problem they are trying to solve.

With this understanding, we can then decide what to do about it. We can decide:

Whether our targeted consumers/prospects would prefer written content or video

Whether we produce our video content in house or outsource it

Where and how we make the content available to the public

These questions will all be addressed in the lead up to the keynote presentation.

Today, I want to compare a different video example against the SocialCam ‘quickie’ produced last week.

Lights, Camera, Blog Part 02: Share some expertise and speak to us naturally

electricians-on-video

Electricians, like all of us, sometimes need to put some spark into their video work. (Image from Best Boston Electrical video via YouTube)

In this second installment of Lights, Camera, Blog, I’m going to focus on ways to approach shooting videos in house, in relation to content and shooting style.

It is safe to assume that your first time making video for your marketing will be a little nerve wracking, so the more you can stay on safe, confident territory the better.

The upside of this, is that it means you can actually produce some content that customers and prospective customers might find useful or helpful.

This is because your most confident territory is likely going to be doing what you do well.

I will show you some example videos in a moment, but first let’s look at some good rules of thumb:

  • Remember it is NOT a commercial
  • Keep it short
  • Make it complete – show a complete process, or work through ALL the key points about a product or service relative to the context being shown
  • Create a simple shoot where you can capture sound and picture together on your smart phone or domestic video camera

All of the following sample videos break or follow these various rules, so let’s learn from their mistakes and efforts.

Lights, Camera, Blog Part 01: Using Socialcam to build your video skills

socialcam

This is Socialcam in action with a black and white filter called ‘noire’ on display. You can swipe your viewing screen to work through the filters after your first click of the red Record button. On the second click, you are filming. The third click stops the show.

So, you are interested in shooting some video for your online marketing but don’t feel confident with a camera?

This is where your smartphone and Socialcam can come to the rescue.

Socialcam is a free app for iPhone and Android phones that makes it easy to:

  • Shoot video
  • Apply styles
  • Add music and titles
  • Share video online

I would argue that before you take your ‘real’ video camera out its case, you spend some time shooting scenes with your phone in your office, at home with your family, or when you’re out at the beach or markets or national park.

This is one of the best ways to learn quickly about what works and what doesn’t work because you can shoot, package and review your work quickly – and then learn from your ‘mistakes’.

I have a few sample videos to show you but first some key points about my mission with the Lights, Camera, Blog series. It is about:

  • empowering you to create interesting social media content without having to spend big dollars on a professional crew. However, there will be some times when you DO choose to go down that route.
  • understanding that this is not about training you up in a completely different field but rather just sharing some basic tips and pointers so that if you get some ideas for simple messages to share, the technology and technique will not be an obstacle.
  • realising that many of your customers and potential customers are likely to be fascinated by what goes on behind the scenes at your business, as part of their assessment process in deciding to choose you or a competitor, or just as part of their growing awareness that they need a product or service like yours.

So, on with a few quick videos and some pointers before you start.
